RMIT University Australia
About RMIT University Australia
RMIT exists to create transformative experiences for our students, getting them ready for life and work, and to help shape the world with research, innovation, teaching and engagement.
We do this by bringing the talents of our staff and students together with industry and the community to renew ourselves through teaching, learning, research and collaborative innovation, all supported by new technology. And by building on what we have achieved and embracing the possibilities of digital, economic and social transformation to shape the future in a way that no other university can.
Our task is to bring the talents of our staff and students together with industry and the community to renew ourselves through teaching, learning, research and collaborative innovation, all supported by new technology.
RMIT began in 1887 when Francis Ormond had a vision for helping workers acquire real-world skills. The people of Melbourne matched his enthusiasm to start a very practical place of learning. We still live this vision today – but now on a global scale.

Why are you involved as a partner in the Growing Southern Gippsland project?
RMIT University has been involved with the Growing Southern Gippsland project from the beginning. Via the Centre for People, Organisation and Work (CPOW) the work investigates how farming households, practitioners and advisors are adapting farming practices to confront the challenges of changing climate.
We focus on the practical experience that informs education, training and income generation in the Southern Gippsland region. Innovative and responsive farming practices are examined to understand what job and income generating opportunities arise when the farming community adapts to changing climate and community expectations.
What are your hopes for the project upon project completion and the future?
That the Growing Southern Gippsland web portal becomes the place where farming households can build their capabilities to address the impacts of climate change. This repository of information and experience will inform how farming practices can develop in positive and inclusive ways. We see this project as a way of promoting inclusive and sustainable growth, employment and decent lives for all. Growing Southern Gippsland is a first step towards this goal.
